Better Packages Success Story: US Navy—USS Nimitz

The USS Nimitz (CVN-68), a nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, is named for five-star Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who served during World War II as commander of the Pacific fleet. The USS Nimitz was launched in 1972 and is one of the largest warships in the world. USS Nimitz deployments have included the Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, Caribbean Sea, North Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf and the Western Pacific and has called Norfolk, Virgina and Bremerton, Washington home before moving to its current port of San Diego, California.

To get an idea of the shear size of the USS Nimitz, its flight deck covers a total of 4.5 acres and holds about 85 airplanes, and the ship is about 18 stories from keel to the top of its mast. More than a million pounds of mail go through its Post Office each year.
